What a season it’s been! We started it in the snow, had a lovely spring and then had the hottest
summer in a long time so, all in all, it’s been a very tough season for trout fishing. After the heat
wave in May/June it took a long time for the water temperatures to drop far enough for us to
resume stocking for the summer. Although we all love the sunshine the fish really don’t! Our
stocking continued into October on most waters and there has been some good sport around the
Rainbow waters in the past few weeks. I am really looking forward to 2019.

Highlights from the Season

The fly fishing fair at Roadford Lakeside kicked the season off in style with another great event attracting hundreds of anglers.Watch out for the 2019 fly fair date over the winter. The Brown trout fishing at Fernworthy, Colliford and Roadford has been really good at times and much more consistent than our Rainbow waters. As an experiment, we stocked some Rainbows of over 10lbs for the first time in 10 years into Kennick, Stithians, Siblyback and Burrator. The largest caught was 13lb 10oz taken by Mark Cheriton at Kennick.

The quality of our stocked Rainbows and Blues has been exceptional. The Blue trout, with their turbo charged nature, have really provided some extra fight and excitement in amongst the Rainbows. Colliford produced a 9lb 8oz Brown which goes to show there are some real monsters lurking in its depths. Although many large trout, estimated at doubled figures in size, were seen in Roadford, the largest caught during the season was a clonker for Steve Gilbert at 4lb 6oz. Fernworthy was again the most consistent fishery across the waters. The dry fly action was superb and the ‘Sedge Hog’ really became the ‘go to’ fly for the lake, even rising fish when nothing seemed to be happening.

Great News!

We have extended the Rainbow trout season to the end of November for bank fishing only! Season permit holders get the extra month as a bonus. We are also offering 20% off day tickets for Kennick, Siblyback and Stithians when you buy your permit online through our website, www.swlakesfishing.co.uk

Burrator is £10 for a 3 fish limit, so why not take advantage of these offers and get down to one of the lakes for one last go before we close?

Weekly catch reports

We have included a lot more detail and information on the weekly catch reports this year which I hope you have found useful. We have also tried to post them on the website as early each week as we could. If you would be interested in receiving the catch reports by email, please let me know. To help us improve the quality of the reports we would like more information, pictures and catch details from you. More accurate reports improves everyone’s chances of catching fish at our venues.

The way forward

To help us plan for the future of our trout waters we asked for your input via a mid-season survey. In total, we had 122 surveys returned from a wide variety of day and season ticket holders covering every trout water we operate. The feedback was comprehensive and has given us a tremendous platform from which we can build for the future. We were delighted at the recognition of the special character of the South West Lakes waters and it is obvious how much enthusiasm there is for
trout fishing in the area. You can be confident that we intend to achieve our goal of a portfolio of first class trout fishing waters – even if it will take us a little while to get there! Thank you very much to those of you who contributed to the survey. We will keep everyone up to date with our plans as they develop.

Best of the Best 2018

The season grand finale was the Best of the Best final at Kennick on 7th October.
35 anglers turned out after qualifying throughout the year across the four Rainbow trout venues. There was over £3000 worth of prizes on offer with £2000 in prize money and over £1000 in fantastic prizes sponsored by Snowbee. Dave Perks from Newquay was the winner collecting £1000 on the day after catching 6 fish for 12lb 10oz. Paul Jones (Wadebridge) was second and Graham Watts (Bodmin) was third. It was a good day’s fishing with a rod average of just under 3 fish per person.

Siblyback FFA

I am delighted to report that a fishing club has been formed at Siblyback. The Siblyback Fly Fishers Association is up and running and they have set up a calendar of events including competitions, fly tying evenings and other social gatherings. They are recruiting members and anyone interested in joining should contact Derek Aunger at derek.aunger@btinternet.com.

2018 Competition Results

Throughout the season we ran a series of competitions.

Snowbee team of four event at Siblyback, 15 April 2018:
Won by Kennick A Team for the second successive season. The team was made up by John Hern (captain), Rob Gale, Duncan Kier and Alec Hoare who landed the biggest fish of the season from Siblyback at 12lb 5oz! They caught 8 fish for 24lbs in total.

Bank Pairs at Kennick, 6 May 2018:
The Kennick Bank Pairs in May was won by Mike Boston and Chris Bolt who caught 12 fish for 23lbs 14oz. They each won a season permit for 2019 worth over £400. 10 pairs of anglers caught a mix of Rainbows and Blues with 83 fish landed on the day.

Peninsula Classic at Kennick, 24 June:
The 26th Peninsula Classic at Kennick was won by Andy Gooding for the second year running. Andy’s 8 fish for 12lbs was enough for him to win a season ticket for 2019. It was a tough days fishing with a rod average of 1.5 fish per person. Andy caught his 8 fish in half an hour once he had located them in deep water by the dam!

Around the Clubs

I would like to thank all the angling clubs which use our waters and support our fisheries but in particular the CAST club at Stithians, Kennick FFA, Burrator Fly Fishers and Siblyback FFA. I look forward to working with all of you through the winter and into 2019. I also have to say a massive thank you to all our volunteer bailiffs around the lakes. We have really increased the patrols this year which has made a huge difference in reducing illegal fishing.
