Wimbleball Lake

Trout Fishing at Wimbleball Lake

This is a Troutmaster water.

Wimbleball Lake, Somerset, TA22 9NU
The home to the Best of the Best competition Wimbleball is often referred to as the ‘jewel in Exmoor’s crown’. This 374 acre reservoir is regularly stocked with Rainbow and Blue trout up to 6lb to ensure excellent sport. A good head of wild Brown Trout can be found all over the reservoir with fish in excess of 4lbs regularly caught. The best brown trout from the 2015 season was a 6lb fin perfect specimen (browns are catch and release only). The best rainbow trout in 2015 was a 6lb 8oz specimen.

There is a good mayfly hatch in late June/early July, whilst buzzer and nymph fishing gives good sport throughout the season. Popular patterns are the diawl bach, pheasant tail nymph, and gold ribbed hares ear. Floating lines are the best method throughout the season as fish can be found cruising sub surface, while Intermediate and sinking lines work well in early and late season.
We have a fleet of 10 fishing boats (six with 4-stroke petrol outboards) available 7 days a week until 8pm. Advanced booking is essential to guarantee availability. Flyaking is also available, so come and fish from a Kayak, you can bring your own, or hire ours. Float tubing is also available but we do not provide the tubes.

This is a £5000 Best of the Best water –see the competitions page for more details

Wimbleball has a ‘Catch and release’ permit option which is available all season, ensuring an excellent days sport as bags of 20 fish are not uncommon (barbless hooks must be used).

The wheelyboat for disabled anglers should be booked 48 hours in advance via the Wimbleball Activities Centre.

Wimbleball Fly Fishers organise competitions and social events based at the fishery throughout the year.

The South West Fishing For Life project for women recovering from breast cancer is also based at Wimbleball.

We hold the annual ‘Wimbleball 2000’ boat pairs competition every September – Please see the competitions page for more information.
