Trout Fishing at Roadford Lake

Roadford Lake, Devon, PL16 0JL

Set in the rolling Devon hills on the edge of Dartmoor, Roadford offers more than 700 acres of Brown Trout fishing to explore by boat or bank. There are many little bays and inlets to explore making it a very appealing. Roadford is one of the best Brown Trout fisheries in the UK and has provided outstanding fishing in the past few seasons particularly by boat but some equally good catches have been from the bank. There have been multiple catches of 30+ fish by boat in a single day. There have been numerous fish over 5lb caught and released with specimens just under 7lb in the past couple of seasons. The best sport has been boat fishing over the aeration pipes in mid-season and fishing by boat towards the bank in the early season taking advantage of the food and shelter the submerged vegetation provides. Roadford also has good hatches of Hawthorn flies in May which provide terrific dry fly fishing. Fishing in 2015 was great when conditions were right. The majority of fish are stocked at 7-10 inch but we do stock fish up to 2lbs.

There are boats for hire, but booking is essential to avoid disappointment. The wheelyboat for disabled anglers should be booked 48 hours in advance. For more information click here.

Self-launch for float-tubing and kayak fishing is available at Roadford – please contact the staff on site.

Why not try our special ‘Castabout’ season permit which covers all our Brown Trout waters (Fernworthy/Roadford/Colliford and Wistlandpound).

Perch Fishing Opportunity

Roadford will be open for PERCH fishing during July, August and September. The 730 acre water has a large head of Perch, and some real specimens, with fish well over 3lbs having been caught in 2019. It’s the ‘unknown mystery’ that makes this opportunity so appealing – the potential of a real monster uncaught stripey! During 2019 which was the first time we have allowed Perch fishing there were multiple catches of Perch which were over 2lbs.

The Perch fishing is by boat ONLY and boats can be booked on 01566 771930 or online at a cost of £15 for the day. Day tickets are £10 per person per day and available from the self service permit room at the activity and angling centre. We have a petrol engine which is available at £9 per day or you can bring an electric engine. Oars are provided. Please read our Perch fishing rules here.
