South West Lakes Weekly Trout Fishery Round Up

For detailed catch reports for each site click on ‘Waters’ above and select the appropriate lake.

Week ending 17th March 2019

Welcome to last weeks round up across our fisheries…….

All the fisheries are now open! There was mixed results with the brown trout fisheries opening on Friday 15th and the weather was just awful! Luckily its looking good for the remainder of this week so a great time to get out to one of our lakes and have a go!

Don’t forget permits are available online or from permit rooms on site (not Colliford or Wistlandpound). You can also fill in a catch return online

Stocked Rainbows and wild browns…..

The rod average last week was 4.7 fish per person which is fantastic! The fish being mainly caught at Longstone and Sheepstor dam at the moment. Plenty of 3lb+ fish being caught too which is great.

Lures are working well, on intermediate or slow sinking lines with a slow retrieve. Damsels, tadpoles, gold heads and cats whiskers being the favourites at the moment.

Boat fishing is for members of Burrator Fly Fishers only but you can join the club by emailing

Kennick fished really well for those who braved it and the rod average was just under 4 fish per person for the week.

Malcome Ure and boat partner had the best catch of the week with over 20 fish coming to the boat with the largest being 3lb 8oz.

Andy Lobb had a cracking day (picture below) with 7 fish, 3 of which were over 3lbs and the other 4 all over 2lbs.

Laployds, the Narrows, Clampitts and central waters were producing last week so the fish have certainly spread a little more. Gold head damsels, Montanas, Cats Whoskers, Kennick Killers and tadpoles are still the go to flies at the moment.

Boats are bookable on 01647 252898

Siblyback rod average was 4 fish per person and Mr Milne had the best full bag with two fish over 3lbs. fish did come to the odd dry fly last week, Bibio and fritz patterns. No locations were noted in the reports but I recommend you try Two Meadows, the North Shore and the Marshes.

We do have two boats on the water if you would like to book a days boat fishing please call 01566 771930. Boat must be booked for Siblyback by 3pm the previous day.

It has been a good week for fishing up at the lake, with a rod average of 1.9 and two full bags from John Henderson and Paul Wallace with Paul winning the first competition of the year for the CAST club where 8 anglers turned out for 23 Rainbows. Pheasant Tail nymphs, hare’s ear, diawl bach and  damsels were the best patterns.

Stocked browns

Venue regulars Dean Boucher and Damien Lawrence managed 2 fish each up to 1lb 8oz and all the fish were in good condition as always. There were no locations which stood out as holding plenty of fish so the best advice is to travel light and keep moving.

We have doubled our stocking this year and stocked 4000 Brownies ranging from 3 inch to 10 inch. These fish will provide some sport this year but will make the future of Colliford a fantastic prospect. Fish seem to be growing half a pound a year so in 12 months time and beyond these fish will be 1lb+ and you can expect plenty of sport.

Only one angler gave it a whirl but he did catch 6 fish over two days. Well done Duncan Kier!. Three fish each day all caught on a woolly bugger fly! Duncans best locations were Shop Inlet which is the next bay passed the watersports centre and the large inlet opposite the café.

We have doubled our stocking into Roadford this season. Nearly 4000 Brownies up to 1lb 8oz were stocked from Torre Trout Farm last week. This will provide some great fishing for this season and beyond so Roadford is well worth trying. We have two brand new Coulam boats and we do have an engine for you to hire but your welcome to bring your own electric outboard. If you would like to book a boat please call 01409 211507
