86 Brownies for two rods!

Roadford sprung into life at the weekend with an amazing haul of fish for two Roadford regulars Duncan Kier and Andy Birkett. Duncan who fished on Saturday 23 July caught and released 56 browns up to 3lb 4oz. Andy, fishing the Sunday managed 30 fish up to 3lbs in weight despite the onslaught from Duncan the previous day! Andy sent us a picture of one of his brownies in the net. The average size for both anglers was between 1lb 8oz and 2lb 8oz.

Duncan quoted ‘ I Have done a lot of fishing over the years but never had a day quite like Saturday. Headed straight for the boils and caught a lovely two pounder on the very first cast. What followed was almost a fish a cast and I spent the rest of the day moving up and down the boils. Things went a little slow during the early afternoon but by 3:30 the cloud rolled back in and the fish switched back on. Landed 56 up to 3lb 4oz, lost many more and got smashed by a couple of much better fish. A few small fish but the vast majority were between 1lb 8oz to 2lb 8oz and fought really well (my arm and shoulder recovering well)!’. As for flies Duncan didn’t change all day, a Squinky and muddler combination doing all the damage.

Andy and Duncan both fished by boat over the boils near the dam – a prolific spot when the conditions are right! Rumours are going around of a Brown being caught in excess of 9lbs this season which would be a new lake record. Wes Ower’s Brown from 2013 which was estimated at near 7lbs is also pictured.
